The Global Health Group The Global Health Group (GHG) at the University of California San Francisco, Global Health Sciences, is an "action tank," dedicated to translating major new paradigms and approaches into large-scale action to impact positively the lives of millions of people. Led by Sir Richard Feachem, formerly the founding Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the GHG works across the spectrum from analysis, through policy formulation and consensus building, to comprehensive implementation of programs in collaborating low- and middle-income countries. Areas of Focus The Global Health Group selects high priority issues in global health that are ripe for significant new approaches and/or the adoption of pioneering new technology. In its startup phase, the GHG is focusing on two programmatic areas:
Malaria Elimination Initiative
Providing intellectual and practical leadership and support for the elimination of malaria, starting at the borders of the endemic zone. The GHG has convened the Malaria Elimination Group, which brings together experts from 15 countries to guide regional elimination efforts. The GHG has been awarded a 3-year, $3.5 million grant from the Exxon Mobil Foundation to expand its support for malaria elimination efforts in southern Africa. In collaboration with many partners, the GHG is also working on the design and implementation of malaria elimination programs in seven countries, in Melanesia (the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu), Southern Africa (Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland) and China. Health Systems InitiativeThe GHG is providing intellectual and practical leadership to identify an expanded role for the private sector in health systems strengthening in developing countries. The GHG is focusing particularly on Public Private Investment Partnerships (PPIPs), working to better understand and document experience to date, in order to stimulate both the rigorous evaluation of PPIPs, and their further development and implementation. Approach The GHG works closely with a wide range of public and private partners to achieve its goals. GHG staff provide technical expertise, consultation, and program support at all levels, including in the field in countries where programs are being developed and implemented. The GHG employs a small team of dedicated professionals based in San Francisco, California, and Pretoria, South Africa.
