About Us
The PPHG (formerly the Institute for Global Health) is a dynamic nexus of applied prevention and public health research working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR); World Health Organization (WHO); Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS); the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria; and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Our multidisciplinary faculty has led highly effective programs in many developing countries.
George W. Rutherford, M.D., A.M., our Director, also is Head of the Division of Preventive Medicine and Public Health and is the Salvatore Pablo Lucia Professor of Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
George Rutherford receives Holly Smith Award for Faculty
Dr. Rutherford has won this year’s Holly Smith Award for Exceptional Service to the School of Medicine. Three awards are given—one to a faculty member and two to staff. The winners are deemed to exhibit those qualities best exemplified by Holly Smith: dedication to the School of Medicine, diversity in roles played, commitment to sustaining UCSF’s position as a world-class institution--and accomplishment of all the above with humor and grace. Dr. Rutherford was honored at the “Salute to Excellence” program on May 27, 2009.
