Short Courses at UCSF

International Traineeships in AIDS Prevention Studies (I-TAPS)

The International Traineeships in AIDS Prevention Studies (I-TAPS) Program, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the Fogarty International Center, and private donors, has been training scientists from low- and middle-income countries in AIDS prevention research since 1988. Ten to 12 applicants are selected each year to train with UCSF scientists at PPHG and with CAPS scientists. During the 6-week intensive short-course, each visiting scientist develops a protocol for a specific AIDS prevention–related research project to be carried out in his or her home country. Upon completion of data collection, the trainee may return to PPHG/CAPS for a course in scientific writing, during which data analysis is completed and a manuscript is written for submission to the peer-reviewed literature.

Japanese HIV Nurse Training Program (ACTION Program)

This training is a collaborative program of the Global Health Sciences/ Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (GHS/CAPS) International Program and the Japan Foundation for AIDS Prevention. The UCSF co-directors are Jeffrey S. Mandel and Naoki Onizuka. Two to three times yearly, we offer a two-week comprehensive training program to visiting Japanese nurses on current issues in HIV/AIDS care, such as recent treatment advances, drug management and adherence, multi-disciplinary case management, peer counseling, and psycho-social issues of patients and health care providers. The program began in 1997; as of the end of the 2008-09 program year, 190 nurses have completed this training.

For more information on this program, please contact Naoki Onizuka at 415-597-9375.

ICOHRTA Brazilian Scientists Program

This project is an extension of I-TAPS through a partnership with the Centro de Estudos de AIDS do Rio Grande do Sul (CEARGS) in Porto Alegre, Brazil and with the Universidade Federale do Bahia (UFBA) in Salvador. It is funded by the Fogarty International Center. The main goal of the program is to provide self-sufficiency for research scientists in Brazil, to ensure that they are capable of designing and implementing AIDS intervention research, independently or in collaboration with U.S. investigators.

Brazilian scientists are accepted into the ITAPS program at PPHG/CAPS as described above. Trainings in the host country take place at CEARGS and UFBA and are conducted in Portuguese. Brazilian collaborators work in conjunction with the Brazilian Ministry of Health, UNAIDS, CDC, and other partners to identify trainees in Brazil.
