Botswana triangulation meeting at UCSF
PPHG offers four options for conducting technical assistance in triangulation, depending on the data and resources available. Each option involves an increasing level of engagement and time investment by the host country.

Option #1: Training (generic data)
Course Description: Training course for participants using already prepared materials with generic data.
Objectives:
At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Communicate the importance of using triangulation methodology for answering public health questions
- Understand how to identify data sources
- Make observations from multiple data sets
- Develop and test hypotheses to explain these observations
Country Requirements:
Minimal – convene relevant participants and provide venue.
Time: 1-4 days
Option #2: Hands-on Training (country provides data)
Course Description: Training course for participants in their own country using generic and existing data obtained from that country.
Objectives:
Same as #1, and including:
- To identify and capture existing data sources in country
- Create a catalog of existing data sources
- Have an understanding of trends and data in country.
Country Requirements:
Minimal-convene relevant participants and provide venue. The country
ensures that data are available during workshop.
Time: 4-10 days
Option #3: Comprehensive
Course Description: Conduct full triangulation exercise in conjunction with stakeholders in the country. Exercise includes two capacity-building workshops, a complete catalogue of data, and a final report that answers questions of interest.
Objectives:
Same as #1 and #2, and including:
- Stakeholder meeting to brainstorm key questions and data sources
- UCSF analyst in the host country responsible for data collection
- Creation of database and practicums
- Small team of participants travels to San Francisco for hands-on training (optional)
- 3-5 day final workshop in the participants' country
- Final report to address key question.
Country Requirements:
- New, existing data which is relevant to key question (e.g., new round of DHS, AIS, ANC)
- Access to data (institutional review board approvals)
- Support person in the host country from CDC and MOH
Time: 6-8 months
Option #4: Advisory
Course Description: Host country organization conducts full triangulation exercise with technical assistance from UCSF.
Objectives:
Same as #3, except:
- Host country analyst or team responsible for data collection and preparation with UCSF technical assistance
- UCSF participates in without leading stakeholder meeting and final workshop
- Host country organization responsible for final report with UCSF technical assistance
- Data collection
- Creation of database and practicums
- Small team from participants' country to visit San Francisco for hands-on training (optional)
- 3- to 5-day final workshop in the host country
- Final report to address key question.
Country Requirements:
Same as Option #3, and including
- High capacity in the host country; participants have done triangulation before and are led by a strong technical team.
Time: 6-8 months
