UCSF Global Health Sciences Symposium Global Health Sustainability: Focusing on the Workforce In September 2007, UCSF Global Health Sciences hosted a symposium bringing together an influential cast of global health leaders. Represented were major donors, leaders of academic programs in global and public health, and a select group of policymakers from around the world. Convened by UC Presidential Scholar Jaime Sepulveda and UCSF Global Health Sciences Chair Haile Debas, the meeting began with Dr. Sepulveda's remarks on the rationale for the symposium and a keynote address by Lincoln Chen, president of the China Medical Board and chair of the Global Health Workforce Alliance. Three panel discussions followed, addressing global health academic programs in North America and Europe, workforce needs and training experiences in poor and emerging countries, and innovations in policy and finance. Finally, the group convened to consider priorities and next steps in addressing the critical issues facing the global health workforce.
