 Areas of Concentration

Global Health Sciences has responded to high levels of interest in global health among students across UCSF by crafting areas of study focusing on global health within existing programs. Termed an area of concentration (AoC), these studies enable students to broaden their knowledge of global health topics and skills while deepening their experience in international research or practice. There are two Global Health AoCs at UCSF: one for students in the Graduate Division (see below) and one for students in the Medical School. For information on the Medical Student AoC, see the Office of International Programs, directed by Dr. Tom Novotny. Opportunities for other health professional students are currently under discussion. UCSF students with strong interest in global health are encouraged to monitor the status of the MS in Global Health Sciences being developed.

Goals and Description

Graduate AoC in Global Health

Program description

The AoC for students in the Graduate Division at UCSF began in September 2005 as a means for students pursuing academic degrees to incorporate global health coursework and experience into the degree. Students in the AoC participate in core courses in global health over the course of two years and are expected to complete their thesis or dissertation on a topic of global health relevance. Only UCSF students accepted to or enrolled in existing PhD programs are eligible for the GHS AoC.

Areas of study

The program is open to current or prospective students in any UCSF PhD area of study subject to approval of the Education Coordinator. Current participating graduate programs are:

Students in other departments should contact GHS Educational Programs to discuss admission to the AoC.

Curriculum

The courses listed below are required for participants in the AoC and are open to all UCSF students who meet the prerequisites. Contact the GHS Educational Programs for additional information.

Year 1

Introduction to Global Health (Spring Quarter)
The global burden of disease, major health interventions, public and private international health organizations, and methods of community-based interventions are the major topic areas of this introductory course.

Year 2

Global Health Problem Solving and Science (Summer Quarter, August)
This problem-based learning course focuses on topics of critical interest in global health, including multinational organizations, high disease burden global health problems, collaborative approaches to solving such problems, and career tracks for global health.

Two elective courses related to global health
Students are encouraged to take courses beyond their primary discipline, such as anthropology, economics, entomology, area studies, engineering, Designing Clinical Research, etc. These courses, which may be from any UCSF school or UC Berkeley course list, must be approved by the home program director, the instructor of record for the course, and the Education Coordinator; courses should offer a new perspective on their proposed research topic.

Application and Funding

Students may apply to the GHS AoC concurrently with their application to a participating UCSF graduate program OR after enrollment. Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong interest in global health research as a career path, relevant experience such as international work or voluntary service, and proficiency in a language other than English. The support of the program director is required for consideration.

Concurrent applicants

Students applying concurrently to the GHS AoC and a graduate program are required to submit a supplemental application detailing their experience in global health as well as possible fields of research interest that link their graduate program with global health. The program director must submit a one-page letter of commitment to support the applicant in research training and career development geared toward global health problems, particularly those affecting research-poor environments.

Current UCSF graduate students

Students already enrolled in the Chemistry and Chemical Biology or Microbial Pathogenesis programs will complete an interest form and application, indicating their commitment to pursue a research career in global health addressing resource-poor populations. They will obtain a nomination letter from their program director indicating his/her commitment to provide mentoring and support to develop a research career in global health.

Funding

Global Health Sciences will provide stipend support to a limited number of AoC applicants each year. GHS is not accepting applications for stipend support at present. New information will be posted here as it becomes available.
