Curriculum

GIS training

Students enrolled in our UCSF-UCB Framework program will receive training in GIS technology through a series of didactic and hands-on seminars on GIS in a teaching lab. The students will learn how to use GPS units in the field, with hands on instruction exercises. They will learn mapping and geospatial data management in the lab with the instructors. The instructors will further prepare students to teach GIS technology at the international sites where they will be doing their project work. GIS technology will be incorporated into the team projects abroad.

Seminars

Seminar time will be utilized by students to work in multidisciplinary teams to develop their summer projects, with guidance from faculty advisors who are in attendance. Students will also be provided with tools, information, and trainings to develop practical skills to assist in project development.

Summer field work

UCSF and UCB have collaborative relationships with various international sites. The program is being developed with these international partners who will be instrumental in hosting the summer projects. The summer experience covers a period of 8 weeks. Students work in interdisciplinary teams to develop a project that the partners have identified as a need or will work on part of an existing project led by UCSF/UCB faculty. Identified sites include Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and India.

Other

Students are also expected to participate in evaluation activities and report on their projects at a UCSF-UCB Global Health symposium upon returning to the Bay Area.
