How to Apply
Applications for the 2010 Program are due November 11
Eligibility
UCSF: First and second year students from the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing; and, the Graduate Division
UC Berkeley: Students in public health (MPH and DrPH), Law, Engineering, Business, Anthropology, Sociology, and Environmental Sciences
Students are required to:
- Attend a two-quarter GIS training course at UC Berkeley, that coincides with Winter and Spring quarters at UCSF and Spring Semester at UCB (Every other Tuesday 4-7 PM, 8 sessions, 3 hours each)
- Attend a two-quarter team building, problem-based learning seminar at UCSF, coinciding with Winter and Spring quarters at UCSF and Spring Semester at UCB (Every other Tuesday 4-7 PM, 8 sessions, 3 hours each)
- Develop and participate in a summer experiential team learning project for an 8 week period at one of the UCSF/UCB Framework sites
- Provide an oral and written report on return from the field experience at a GHS seminar session
- Suggested: Students interested in getting a general background in global health are encouraged to enroll in the Introduction to Global Health course offered at UCSF in the Spring quarter
UCSF and UCB have collaborative relationships with various international sites. The Framework program works with these international partners who will host the students for summer project work. The summer experience covers a period of 8 weeks. Students will work in interdisciplinary teams to carry out a project that the international sites have identified as a need, or will work on part of an existing project led by UCSF/UCB faculty. Identified sites include Kenya, Tanzania, India and possibly Uganda. Details for the sites and projects and will be posted as they become available, but most likely they will build on last year’s experiences. Read about the 2008-09 projects
- The Frameworks program will cover travel to and from the site along with housing costs for the summer time of the project. Students are expected to cover all other incidentals. The program receives varied supplemental funding support from each school; students in some schools may be asked to apply for funding which will support their participation in this program. UCSF medical school student participants in particular will be asked to apply for funding in this manner.
- Students will be expected to be abroad working on projects from mid-June until mid-August. There may be some slight differences in dates at the various sites.
- Although there will be an attempt to place students in teams going to particular countries of their interest, there is no assurance that this will be possible. Thus students applying to the program should assume they could be on a team going to any one of the countries noted above.
- This program is for those with an interest in global health. Previous international work or research experience is not required. Desire to work on a project identified by people on the ground in an international setting is a prerequisite.
- Students will be preparing for, and working on a project identified for them by people on the ground in one of several sites. Thus this program is not for those who wish to do work in a specific area of their own interest. Students will also be assigned to teams to work on their projects. Thus this is not a program for those who wish to do individual work abroad.
- Research may be part of the project work, which will require IRB approval, but research may not be part of the project at every site.
Desirable attributes of applicants include:
- Interest in future global health research or project work
- Interest in global health as part of a career
- Ability to interact and communicate effectively with others
- Ability or desire to work with a team of students
- Previous experience working or studying in culturally diverse settings
