Remembering the forgotten: invertebrate pathogens as new cures for neglected tropical roundworm diseases

Raffi Aroian, PhD
Professor, Section of Cell and Developmental Biology, UCSD

Monday, April 6, 2009, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Mission Bay, Byers Hall 212

Four intestinal parasitic nematodes are among the most common parasites in the world and are associated with impoverished living conditions, infecting over 1 billion people and responsible for causing significant morbidity in children and pregnant women in the developing world. Raffi Aroian, PhD, Professor, Section of Cell and Developmental Biology, UCSD, will discuss a promising characterization of a new class of natural anthelmintics and the serendipitous discovery of how two different anthelmintic classes can be combined to express outstanding nematicidal properties.
