February 1, 2005 Global Health Sciences Launches Seminar Series in February Capacity building and sustainability in developing countries to be focus of series. By Suzie Larsen, Global Health SciencesGlobal Health Sciences (GHS) will kick off a new seminar series starting February 24, 2005 to discuss global health projects in a multidisciplinary setting with the hopes of facilitating education, mentorship, project support and collaboration. The seminar series came to fruition at the hands of an Small lunch-time gatherings among a group of young researchers from economics, sociology, and public health, quickly grew as they started to include faculty members, according to GHS fellow and project coordinator, Lori Uyeno. "We realized how useful it would be to have a forum to discuss common challenges," said Uyeno. "Especially in long term projects that have some element of of capacity building and sustainability, and empowering developing countries to improve their health status." The first seminar will be presented by Regis B. Kelly, PhD, the executive director of the Institute of Quantitative Biomedical Research (QB3), on the topic of Developing and Delivering Drugs for Acute Disease for Developing Countries. "He is an interesting and dynamic speaker," said Uyeno. "QB3 works at ways to develop drugs at a cost that developing countries can achieve for diseases that are not a high priority or money maker for the U.S. like malaria and tuberculosis."
